Wall Street Journal: Tennessee Pols to Lamar Alexander: Forget About Low-Carbon Fuel Standards
In certain circles, Tennessee senator Lamar Alexander is a hero on energy matters. His relentless crusade for nuclear power, for instance, became virtually the sum total of GOP energy prescriptions. But that doesn’t mean all of Sen. Alexander’s energy ideas get a warm welcomeeven within the Republican party.
His support for a low-carbon fuel standardessentially a plan to penalize“dirty” fuels such as Canadian oil sandsis rankling some rank-and-file Republicans back in his native Tennessee.
|
State Rep. Susan Lynn fired off a letter last Friday chiding Sen. Alexander for even flirting with the idea; Sen. Alexander has repeatedly said that such a standard could help the environment without raising energy prices.
“At its core, a [low carbon fuel standard] would initiate a direct ban on the importation of some of our most secure and affordable sources of energy,” she wrote. “It would necessarily expand America’s already dangerous dependence on foreign, unstable energy from suppliers half-a-world away…”
She urged Sen. Alexander to use his position on the Senate Environment and Public Works committee “to stand up for the energy interests of Tennessee and prevent this plan from advancing any further.”
This is just the latest salvo in the low-carbon fuel warsa public broadside against an energy policy that doesn’t actually exist.
There was a low-carbon fuel standard in the first version of the Waxman-Markey bill; it later disappeared. It has yet to appear in the Senate climate bill. Yet the very idea of a low-carbon fuel standard that could put Canadian oil off limits has the energy-security crowd mobilizing.
What’s interesting is that Rep. Lynn doesn’t just represent Tennessee’s 57th district. She also chairs the American Legislative Exchange Council’s task force on commerce, insurance, and economic development. ALEC is a group of about 2,000 state legislators fighting for free-market, small-government solutions and helps craft state-level legislation.
ALEC already bitterly opposed the cap-and-trade plans in Congress this year; it apparently finds a low-carbon fuel standard a sorry alternative. That doesn’t leave many options if Washingtonor statesare going to tackle carbon emissions. |

Wamp Vote for H.R. 1586 Proves To Be Major Blunder
Reid ‘Likely’ to Make Entire Health Bill an Amendment to Unrelated Tax Bill That House Passed in March
Wednesday, October 07, 2009
By Nicholas Ballasy, Video Reporter

(CNSNews.com) -- A senior aide to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) told CNSNews.com that it is |
“likely” that Reid will use H.R. 1586a bill passed by the House in March to impose a 90-percent tax on bonuses paid to employees of certain bailed-out financial institutionsas a “shell” for enacting the final version of the Senate’s health care bill, which Reid is responsible for crafting.
Under the procedure, the substance of House Resolution 1586 would be removed and replaced with the entire Senate health care package. The maneuver would initially require the support of 60 senators to vote for cloture on the motion to proceed to H.R. 1586 (i.e., end debate on the congressional procedure and move forward). Hidden agenda? Not so much . . .
By Jean Barwick
September 3, 2009
Over the last several months we have seen the Democrats seize unprecedented control over major banks, the auto industry, energy and healthcare. Our new president, by raw and daring political power, has moved our country dangerously close to the long-promised socialist takeover of the United States. What was once a hidden and secret socialist agenda quietly advanced by a handful of global elitists is now out in the open and moving with brazen speed toward a planned Marxist economy.
No other issue better defines the socialist agenda than health care. The progressives decided long ago that the health care debate, like the environmental debate, like the energy debate, is no longer a debate. The discussion is over and 88 million Americans who are satisfied with their health care should get on board and sacrifice themselves to the federal government and its noble effort to save the 7-10 million American citizens who will remain without health care coverage. Once again, government math rears its ugly head and we are being forced to swallow the "fair to a few means less for all" pill.
To grasp what's going on with health care, we must realize that the Democrat’s agenda is global, not domestic. The United Nations has released countless statements about restricting global resource use among affluent societies to "prudent" limits while the poor raise their living standards. The call for long-term global governance is loud and clear. Few can doubt that President Obama expects that the United Nations validates our existence as a nation, and he eagerly leverages more and more of our resources to the UN to secure that validation. Government-controlled health care will certainly restrict resource use to "prudent" limits and bring our affluent society to its knees before the UN.
The reckless nationalization of manufacturing and banking institutions, profligate spending and money printing, and unprecedented national debt by this administration are creating a confluence of economic conditions that have the potential to drive our economy into collapse. With that collapse will come rationing of health care and other resources.
Guiding the president's agenda are nearly 40 populist demagogues sequestered in the Executive Branch and insulated from congressional oversight not that oversight in this congress is particularly useful to anyone these days. Several of these "special policy advisors", or re-branded czars, are socialists, and one is a self-avowed and published communist.
Dr. Ezekiel Emmanuel serves as the White House Health Reform Policy Advisor. Dr. Emmanuel summed up the demographics of the Obama health care plan this way in January: "When implemented, the “complete lives system” produces a priority curve on which individuals aged between roughly 15 and 40 years get the most chance, whereas the youngest and oldest people get chances that are attenuated." Yes, attenuated means rationed. The “complete lives system” means your constitutionally guaranteed right to self-determination is gone.
This year the Veteran’s Administration’s National Center for Ethics in Health Care resuscitated a 52-page, end-of-life planning guide complete with work sheets to help our veterans determine if they are burdens on society and if their lives are worth living. Imagine the national outrage if this kind of cost containment were suggested for criminals serving life sentences in our nation’s prisons.
It is the tea party movement and town hall protesters who sense most acutely the peril we face. These grassroots Americans have a “priority curve” of their own and are taking a stand against government takeover of not just our health care choices, but our country, as well.
Taylor Caldwell once wrote, “It is a stern fact of history that no nation that rushed to the abyss ever turned back. Not ever, in the long history of the world. We are now on the edge of the abyss. Can we, for the first time in history, turn back? It is up to you.”
Indeed, it is up to you.

Czars…a threat to our liberty! |
|

Our Republic is built on the foundation of liberty; liberty given to us by our Creator. This is enshrined in our Constitution. The Congress, “as the people’s representative”, is the safeguard of this liberty. Each member freely takes an oath to be our watch dog of the people. Sadly this isn’t being done!
President Osama has appointed, at last count, forty-four czars. These are people who supposedly have an expertise in a particular area. Three of the latest appointees have serious problems.
Cass Sunstein is the new Regulatory Czar. The exact definition of this office is still a bit fuzzy. However we do know that he is an extreme animal rights advocate. Sunstein believes that certain animals have the right to have their day in court.
|

Twelve of the nearly 50 "shadow cabinet" appointed by the president.
|
|
John Holdren is the new Science Czar. He believes in population control by forced abortions and/or mass sterilization. Something about this statement seems very familiar. Holdren also believes that new born infants are not fully human; “(they) will ultimately develop into a human being” if properly fed and socialized.
Van Jones is the new Green Czar. He is to bring in many new and improved green jobs. The only trouble with Mr. Jones is that he is a self proclaimed Communist. During a 2005 interview with the East Bay Express, Mr. Jones speaks of his experience in prison. “I was a rowdy nationalist on April 28th, and then the verdicts came down on April 29th, he said. By August I was a Communist”.
Is anyone in Washington concerned about these czars? Are questions being asked about their staffs and who is funding them? Does anyone question the motives and judgment of the President as he surrounds himself with people of such extreme and un-American beliefs?
There is no oversight of these appointees since they are not confirmed by Congress; they answer only to the President. Where are our watch dogs “of the people”?
Members of both Legislative Houses (with very few exceptions) have abdicated their prime responsibility outlined in the Constitution, that of checks and balances. The executive branch of the government is over stepping its authority in many areas, not the least of these is the appointment of numerous czars.
All Representatives and a third of our Senators are “up” for reelection in 2010. To borrow a phrase recently coined by a popular radio and television commentator, “if you’re up, you’re out”. Let this be our motto for the coming year.
You elected officials work for us and “we the people” say you’re fired!

Conservatives boost efforts to organize and rally support on the Web
By Colby Sledge • THE TENNESSEAN • April 26, 2009 • Full article
|
It's not often that Tennessee conservatives offer liberals much praise, but this much they concede: They lag behind their lefty counterparts when it comes to the kind of grass-roots organization that helped elect President Barack Obama.

In response, Tennessee conservatives have taken to ground-up organization through online social networks designed to rally supporters to their cause. It's an attempt to play catch-up to the Obama campaign's online success, which conservatives were unable to emulate in the presidential election, said Judson Phillips, a criminal defense attorney and organizer of Nashville's April 15 tea party rally.
"Whoever wins the 2012 election cannot win without the next generation of social networking Web sites and technology," Phillips said.
The tea party rallies like those held in Tennessee and across the country April 15 are the result of growing discontent among primarily Republican conservatives, who oppose recent Congressional spending and say their views on social issues and national security are going largely ignored. |
